About RoomCalcs
RoomCalcs is a small, independent site of free calculators for home projects: tiling, flooring, painting, concrete, brickwork, roofing, stairs, decking and fencing. The goal is simple: help you buy the right amount of material, the first time — not too little, and not a car-load too much.
Who is behind it
The site is built and maintained by Riyan M., a full stack developer with more than six years of experience building web, mobile and business software, including e-commerce stores, a hospital management system, restaurant POS software and an interactive 3D tile visualizer. There is no big company, no investors and no sponsored content.
How we check our formulas
- Written down first. Every calculator's inputs, formula, defaults and sources are documented before any code is written.
- Tested with hand-worked examples. Each formula has automated tests with numbers worked out by hand — for example, a UK brick wall at 59.26 bricks per m², or a 10 × 10 ft, 4 in slab needing 62 bags of 80 lb concrete. The site is not published if any test fails.
- The worked example on each page is generated by the calculator itself, so the explanation can never disagree with the result.
- Rules of thumb are labelled. Coverage rates, densities and bag yields vary between products, so they are shown as editable defaults, with a note to check the label. Defaults lean towards not running short.
- Safety comes first. The stair calculator checks building rules for several countries but always asks you to confirm with local building control. We never size joists, beams or foundations.
